Unlocking Joy Through Self-Permission: Why Giving Yourself Permission Can Transform Your Life

When was the last time you allowed yourself to fully embrace joy? For many of us, especially high-performing, service-oriented leaders, joy can feel like an indulgence, something we’ll get to "someday." But here’s the secret: giving yourself permission to pursue joy could be the key to unlocking a more fulfilled, aligned life.

In a recent live session, I discussed the concept of self-permission and why it’s crucial to a life of alignment and happiness. We began by revisiting the "red threads"—those activities that make us feel alive, present, and truly ourselves. For me, red threads like writing and trail running are more than hobbies. They are pathways to joy and connection with myself.

Yet, many of us hesitate to embrace these threads. Why? Because we’re conditioned to seek permission from others, fearing judgment, imperfection, or disappointing those around us. We internalize messages that joy is frivolous or undeserved.

The Cycle of Denying Joy

This conditioning can create a self-perpetuating cycle. When we deny ourselves joy, we show up as a less vibrant version of ourselves. Our energy diminishes, and we miss out on a fuller, richer life.

But when we allow ourselves to pursue joy, even in small ways, we begin to break that cycle. We experience alignment, feel more whole, and contribute positively to those around us. Joy isn’t just for us; it ripples outward, inspiring others.

Taking That First Step

So, how can you start? Begin by identifying one thing you love but haven’t given yourself permission to do. It could be as simple as spending more time on a creative hobby, carving out a few hours a week for self-care, or giving yourself grace to take a break. Write it down, and ask yourself: what holds you back from embracing this joy?

Permission Starts Within

The journey to self-permission is gradual, but with each step, you’ll find more ease, purpose, and yes—joy. The more we live in alignment, the more we contribute positive energy to the world. So, today, I invite you to give yourself permission. Rediscover what lights you up and let it guide you toward a more joyful, authentic life.
