Today's question: Who do you want to be in 5 years? How are you planning and preparing for that now?
Notice I didn't ask what you want to be doing or have accomplished in five years, but who do you want to be in five years. I'd also urge you not to use specific job titles like CMO or VP of Engineering or EVP of Product. Industries, companies and the way we work are changing so fast that it's quite likely the actual job you'll be doing in five or ten years doesn't exist yet.
Instead, who do you want to be as leader? as teammate? as partner? friend? business owner? coach? parent? individual?
Do you want to be philanthropic? Do you want to be an inclusive leader? Do you want to be the teammate everyone wants on their team? Do you want to be a calm person? A poised person? A person who has fun? Do you want to be a financially stable person? Or a healthy person? A good parent? A relatable sister?
And of course, what are you doing about it? Do you have a plan? Are you taking baby steps towards becoming that person? Are you creating the plan? What support will you want? Are your actions of today preparing you for that?
You can't completely control how industries or titles or the way we work will change. You can't completely control the economy or viruses.
You can control who you will be, the type of person you will be in five years.
